Dr. Velvet L. Smith is an educational specialist who improves educational outcomes for at-promise students. Dr. Smith has a BA degree in Sociology, MED in Interdisciplinary Studies, Educational Specialist Certificate in Educational Leadership, and a Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership. Dr. Smith has also been honored the award of being Teacher of the Year twice. Dr. Smith’s passion is teaching students to read fluently and comprehend well. She has taken an extensive amount of coursework in reading including being trained in Wilson Reading and the Orton Gillingham approach. Most recently, she has engrossed herself in the latest research on the science of reading and its implications on building foundational reading skills.
My higher purpose is to stand in the gap for those that require additional assistance. Once the gap has be filled, they can pay it forward.
When not fulfilling her lifelong dream of being an educator, Dr. Velvet Smith is a devoted wife and mother of three children. Dr. Smith also serves as the Chairman of the Board for The M.A.N.(Men Alleviating Negativity) Foundation. The M.A.N. Foundation is a nonprofit organization that focuses on combating recidivism, strengthening the family unit, and supporting children who have an incarcerated parent. Dr. Smith has a heart for doing the work that improves the lives of those in the local community. Dr. Smith is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. and is very active in her alumnae chapter.
